Artificial intelligence is without question one of the greatest opportunities and challenges in the course of modern digitalization of business processes. But AI approaches are not really new; initial ideas even date back to 1936. In the years that followed, great efforts were made to further develop the technology. But promising solutions were usually followed by deep disillusionment. In particular, the low computing power of the computers of the time and the high data flows slowed down the further development of artificial intelligence. Today, however, things are different. Our computers are real high-performance machines and, thanks to cloud computing, can access almost infinite amounts of data in real time.
Important milestones on the path to artificial intelligence in companies are:
- 1936: Alan Turing proves that a computing machine is capable of mapping cognitive processes, provided that these can be represented in individual processes by an algorithm.
- 1950: The Turing test. Test subjects exchange information with their conversation partners in a chat environment and are supposed to unmask the computer. If at least 30 percent cannot identify the computer, the test is passed.
- 1956: At a conference in New Hampshire, scientists decide to use the term "artificial intelligence" for simulated human intelligence. In addition, the first program to prove mathematical theorems is created: the "Logic Theorist".
- 1966: Joseph Weizenbaum from MIT invents the first chatbot ELIZA, which simulates different conversation partners using scripts.
- 1972: Expert systems (computer programs) are used for the first time in medicine to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
- 1986: The computer learns to speak. The NETtalk program can read words, pronounce them and even learn new words. NETtalk is one of the first artificial neural networks.
- 1997: “Deep Blue”, a chess machine from IBM, beats the reigning world chess champion.
- 2011: AI for everyone. Thanks to powerful processors in cell phones, tablets and PCs, artificial intelligence has become part of many people's everyday lives. Voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa are becoming increasingly popular.
- 2016: AlphaGo from Google succeeds in clearly beating the exceptional player Lee Sedol in the complicated board game "Go". In this board game there are almost an infinite number of moves, so the software has to independently find new solutions during the duel.
